Darshan Hiranandani : Linking Search Results Directly to Relevant Section in a Page

Hi all,

I’m wondering if it’s possible to link search results directly to specific sections or headings within a page, especially when the search term is found under a particular heading with an anchor or ID.

For example, if the search term “thingamabobs” is found under a heading like this:

Section Three

This section is about thingamabobs, read on for more...

It would be ideal for the search result to link directly to #section-3 so the user is taken straight to that part of the page.

Is this natively supported in most platforms or search engines, or would it require custom processing (like treating each section as a separate document during crawling)?

If you’ve dealt with something like this before or have any suggestions on how to set this up, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks!

Most search engines index at the page level and search results link back to a page, not to a section within a page, and Funnelback is no different here.

If you are using the DXP version of Funnelback there is a plugin available that allows you to split a html page when indexing which can give you this sort of functionality, dependent on the structure of the page and if it can be sensibly split.

To achieve this sort of thing in v15 and earlier would require a custom groovy filter to be written (not really recommended as this makes your upgrade path into v16/DXP more difficult).
