Does anyone know what is a document number and how to improve it?
When I use the SEO auditor, one of the tips that it comes back with is that the page has a low document number however the admin can improve it??

The document number score is low for your page. Pages earlier in the crawl are usually more important pages in the collection. Ask the administrator of your Funnelback installation about giving your page an earlier position in the crawl.
The reference to document number should probably be removed from the advice as the document number is an internal identifier for a document within the Funnelback index.
You can’t directly control the document number assigned to a document and it will change every time the index is rebuilt.
However, low document numbers are generally assigned to documents that are discovered early during a crawl - this means that items that are in the seed list (start URLs) or linked closely from the start URLs will have low document numbers.
Ok so in other words that tip to try and improve it means nothing. An admin or a publisher cannot “improve” that number to improve their ranking?

As an admin, you could manually add a URL to the seed list (Administer > Edit Collection Settings) to ensure it is gathered as early as possible.
While you can’t directly set the document number you can influence the document number that is assigned by making sure your important items are either listed in your seed list (start urls) or having them linked close to the site’s home page.
Items on or linked closely to a site’s home page are considered more important than pages buried deeply within a website. This ranking factor is one of the ways that this is accounted for when ranking search result items.
